Picnic table with umbrella – No need to be clumsy when tasting a lazy afternoon lunch or dinner under the stars. With a sewing machine and an extra half hour you can whip up a tablecloth or two specials mounted on your umbrella table. Make a summer worth of cloths, from light linen to light wax, and party in style.
Measure your picnic table with umbrella. The size and shape will determine how to buy and cut the fabric. Take the diameter of a circular table to count the width of the fabric you need. Design any length from a cloth that just covers the table to a sweeping patio pavement machine. Purchase fabric.

Match patterns to patio furniture and pillows or to umbrella or flowering flower colors. Do some tablecloths from a variety of materials: washable linen, cotton and wax cloth. Wax cloth comes in amazing vintage patterns and can be wiped off or even dropped in the washing machine. And you do not have to fold a sheet of cloth towel because the edges of the scarf do not tear.
Cut a cloth to fit the picnic table with umbrella. One way to do this is to cut two halves as you will go together. Half should be 2 inches wider to accommodate overlap for opening. Mark the hole for umbrella in the middle of the joint and cut out on both pieces. Make a narrow cap on a center edge of the narrower fabric piece, from the umbrella opening to the outside of the fabric. Make a wide hem on the wider fabric on the opposite side, from the umbrella opening to the outer edge of the fabric. This is the play that will slide in the narrow open side and fastened with Velcro strap to hold the tablecloth on the table. When you are done, you will have two pieces of fabric with half circles at their centers and half of their center edges are flat.
Place both halves of the fabric straight to the right and sew the middle stitch on the remaining side from the center umbrella hole to the edge of the fabric. Trim the seam and push it open. Fold the edge of the umbrella circle underneath and sew down, leaving it open on the side where the cloth splits. For stiff material, you may need to make small arrows around the edge of the circle to fold it underneath wrinkles.
Try the cloth on the table to make sure it is flat around the umbrella pole. Select the Velcro fastener strip and remove it from the table. Sew the Velcro straps on the underside of the narrow, draped fabric edge and the upper side of the wider fabric edge. Raise Velcro straps so that the wider puffy half slides right under the second piece and both pieces lie flat when pressed together.
